About the Department
Food safety has become a growing concern in recent times. Food is inextricably linked to health. Access to
sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is the key to sustaining life and promoting good health.
According to World Health Organisation, food borne illnesses as a result of unsafe food not only puts an
enormous burden on health care system but also affects economic productivity of the nation. An integrated
approach on food safety and quality contributes to improved nutrition and health status of population thereby
increasing productivity. Indeed, food safety and quality are of paramount importance to every individual and
society at large. Over the last six decades, the Department of Food Safety & Analytical Quality Control
Laboratory has played a significant and vital role in improving the quality of food and monitoring its safety.
Today, the department stands out in the nation as a leading laboratory involved in all facets of scientific
investigation related to food analysis serving small, medium and large food industries, regulatory/academic
organizations and society at large.
The department has a diverse group of experienced and competent professionals who are involved in research activities on various aspects of food quality and safety that benefits both the food industry and the academia. Linkages with government agencies and food industries have always been a priority and the department is committed to provide high quality analytical services and guidance to food industries and government agencies with its sound scientific knowledge-base supported by state-of-the-art instrumentation. It offers a wide range of science-based food analytical services to the food industries through the Customer Service Cell for compliance under the provision of FSSA 2006, Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), AGMARK, and other national and international standards. Laboratory accreditation is a hallmark of competence and quality assurance. The department is ISO 17025:2005 certified and accredited for more than 300 analytical parameters for chemical and biological testing of foods.
The Department has been designated as the Referral Food Laboratory (RFL) by FSSAI, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India and functions under the provisions of the Food Safety & Standards Act 2006 (FSSA 2006), Rules & Regulations 2011. As an appellate laboratory, it contributes in development and implementation of National Food Standards and Regulations for domestic food business as well as imports. Faculty of the department are members of various National committees of Codex, BIS, FSSAI and provide their scientific inputs and contribute in the development of National and International food standards. Department is open to collaboration and hopes to work together with like-minded people to make our food safe and to contribute to better health of people; to realise the mission of Swasthya Bharath and to make Bharath, truly Sashakth and Samarth.
